Custom Decks Built for How You Actually Live

If you’ve been thinking about adding a deck to your home, you already know the feeling you’re after. Somewhere to grill on a Tuesday evening, host a gathering on a Saturday afternoon, or just sit outside with a cup of coffee before the rest of the house wakes up. A well-built deck makes all of that happen, and it adds real value to your property in the process.

At Roof Panther, we’re a family-owned deck builder serving Champaign, IL and the surrounding communities throughout Central Illinois. As a family-owned roofing contractor in Champaign, we’ve been building custom decks, handling repairs, and helping homeowners create outdoor spaces they actually use. Our approach is straightforward: good materials, proper construction, and work we stand behind.

Wood Decks vs. Composite Decks: Which Is Right for You?

This is the first real decision most homeowners face, and the honest answer is that both have a place depending on your budget, how much maintenance you want to deal with, and how long you plan to stay in your home.

Wood Decks

Pressure-treated lumber is still the most common choice for a reason. It’s cost-effective upfront, widely available, and structurally proven. A well-built wood deck with proper footings and framing will last decades.

The tradeoff is maintenance. Wood requires staining and sealing every two to three years to prevent warping, cracking, and rot. In Central Illinois, where we get real winters and humid summers, skipping that maintenance cycle catches up with you faster than you’d expect. Homeowners who stay on top of it have wood decks that look great for 20-plus years. Homeowners who don’t end up calling us for repairs or full replacements sooner than they planned.

Cedar and redwood are premium wood options that offer better natural resistance to moisture and insects, with a more attractive appearance than standard pressure-treated pine. They cost more upfront but require somewhat less maintenance than treated lumber.

Composite Decks

Composite decking, brands like Trex, TimberTech, and Fiberon, has become the go-to choice for homeowners seeking long-term performance with minimal maintenance. It doesn’t warp, splinter, or rot, and it holds its appearance without staining or sealing. You wash it off a couple times a year and that’s about it.

The upfront cost is higher than wood, typically 30-50% more depending on the brand and board profile you choose. But over a 10-15 year window, the savings on maintenance materials and labor often close that gap considerably. Most composite manufacturers also provide warranties covering 25 years or more against fading and staining, which adds real peace of mind when you’re making a significant investment.

For most Champaign homeowners who plan to stay in their home for many years and want an outdoor space that looks good without a lot of upkeep, composite is usually the right call. For homeowners on a tighter budget who don’t mind the maintenance commitment, quality wood construction is still a smart choice.

We work with both, and we’ll give you a straight comparison based on your specific project rather than steering you toward whatever has the better margin for us.

Why the Quality of Construction Matters More Than the Material You Choose

Here’s something most deck companies won’t tell you: the decking boards you walk on are actually one of the less critical parts of your deck. What determines whether your deck is safe and solid 15 years from now is what’s underneath them.

Footings are everything. In Illinois, frost depth runs around 42 inches, which means footings need to go deep enough to avoid heaving during freeze-thaw cycles. Undersized or shallow footings are the number one reason decks pull away from houses, bounce underfoot, or develop structural problems over time.

Joist sizing and spacing, beam spans, post connections, and ledger attachment to the house are all load-bearing decisions that have to be made correctly at the start. Once the decking is installed, none of that is visible. You’re trusting that it was done right.

I’ve done plenty of deck rebuilds in Champaign where the original deck looked fine on the surface but had footings that weren’t deep enough, joists that were undersized for the span, or a ledger that wasn’t properly flashed and had been letting water into the rim joist for years. By the time a homeowner notices a problem, the repair is always more expensive than doing it right the first time would have been.

We build to code, pull the necessary permits through the City of Champaign or Champaign County, and document our work so there are no surprises at resale.

Deck Design: More Than Just a Rectangle

The basic rectangular platform is still a perfectly good deck, and for a lot of homes and budgets, it’s the right answer. But the design options available today make it worth at least having a conversation about how you want to use the space.

Layout Options Worth Considering

Multi-level decks work well for sloped yards or when you want to define separate areas for cooking, dining, and lounging without everything feeling like one big platform.

Built-in seating eliminates the need for bulky furniture that gets moved around and never looks quite right. A built-in bench along the perimeter also adds a structural rail element that meets code while actually being useful.

Pergolas are a natural extension of a deck project for homeowners who want partial shade and a more defined outdoor living area. We build pergolas as standalone structures and as integrated additions to new deck construction. If that's something you're considering, our pergola page covers the options in more detail.

Privacy screens are increasingly popular, especially on decks that face a neighbor or a street. They can be integrated into the railing system or built as freestanding elements.

Patios are worth mentioning here too. Some outdoor spaces are better served by a ground-level patio than an elevated deck, and some projects combine both. If you're still deciding between the two, take a look at our patio page as well.

We’ve designed and built decks in Champaign with dedicated cooking zones, hot tub surrounds with privacy screening, and built-in dog wash stations. If you have something specific in mind, bring it up during the consultation and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s feasible and what it would cost.

Deck Repairs

Not every project is a new build. If your existing deck has boards that are warping or softening, a railing that’s started to feel loose, or posts that show signs of rot at the base, repairs may be the right move depending on the age and overall condition of the structure.

We assess deck repairs the same way we approach new construction: starting with the structural elements. Surface boards and railings are straightforward to replace. If the framing and footings are sound, a repair or partial rebuild can extend the life of a deck significantly at a fraction of the cost of full replacement. If the underlying structure has been compromised, we’ll tell you that too, because patching over a failing frame is money wasted.

The Roof Panther Process

Consultation

We start with a conversation about how you want to use the space, what your budget looks like, and what your timeline is. We look at your yard, your house’s architecture, and any site-specific considerations like slope, drainage, or existing structures. No pressure, no sales pitch.

Design and Pricing

We put together a detailed design with dimensions, material specifications, and itemized pricing so you know exactly what you’re getting. If there are options worth considering at different price points, we’ll present them clearly so you can make the decision that fits your budget.

Construction

Our crews handle the full build, from footing excavation through final installation. We don’t subcontract to whoever’s available. The team that shows up is the team that builds your deck, and they take the same approach on every project regardless of size.

Warranty and Follow-Up

We provide a workmanship warranty on our installations, and the material warranties from composite manufacturers transfer directly to you. If something isn’t right after we’re done, we come back and fix it. That’s not a policy we have to look up; it’s just how we operate.

Ready to Start Your Deck Project?

Whether you’re planning a simple wood deck for a starter home or a multi-level composite build with pergola and built-in seating, the process starts the same way: a free in-person consultation where we look at your space and talk through what you actually want.
